Hispanoamérica, Latinoamérica and Iberoamérica are denominations which do not have the same meaning. Hispanoamérica (Hispanic America in English) refers to the set of Spanish-speaking American countries. Its demonym in Spanish is “Hispanoamericano/a” (Hispanic American in English), but it should be kept in mind that this term refers to Spanish America, excluding European Spain. Latinoamérica (Latin America in English ) encompasses the set of countries on the American continent in which languages derived from Latin (Spanish, Portuguese and French) are spoken. The demonym “Latinoamericano/a” (Latin American in English) for the nationals of this continent who speak these languages, is equally correct. Finally, to refer exclusively to Spanish-speaking countries, it is more appropriate to use the denomination Hispanoamérica or Hispanic America. However, if Brazil, a Portuguese-speaking country, is included, the term Iberoamérica (Ibero-America in English) and the demonym “Iberoamericano/a” (Ibero-American) are the preferred ones.
