When a constitutively-active potassium channel is experimentally expressed throughout the regenerating portion of axolotl limbs, defective morphologies can result. Pictured is an example of a limb skeleton with an aberrant digit nubbin that has formed at the base of the most posterior digit. Blue coloration indicates cartilage, while purplish coloration indicates ossified bone. For further details, see paper by Sousounis et al., pp. 485 - 494 in the current issue.
