Cover Legend

Only the pluripotent cells of the E3.5 mouse blastocyst express the Oct-4 transcription factor (green); the trophectoderm lacks expression of this lineage marker (red, DNA staining by propidium iodide). At 4 days in vitro, mouse blastocysts form characteristic outgrowths in which pluripotent cells continue to express Oct-4 (green); other cell lines e.g. the primitive endoderm or trophectoderm lack this factor (DNA red). For further information, see paper on the pluripotency of bank vole embryonic cells by Suwinska et al. in the current issue: Int. J. Dev. Biol. 54 (2010): 113-124.
