Apomixis, a unique reproductive mode in plants leading to maternal embryo formation within seeds, is viewed as a promising tool for plant breeding and agriculture. Although most of the underlying molecular mechanisms have not yet been elucidated, evidence for an epigenetic control of apomixis is growing. The photograph shows an apomictic maize-Tripsacum hybrid inflorescence which bears defective seeds. The defects unveil biological constraints to the instalment of apomixis in sexual crops that likely result from alterations perturbing critical epigenetic components of sexual reproduction.
