Whole mount in situ staining for Xwig1 expression during embryonic development of Xenopus laevis. Xwig1, coding for a putative novel resident ER protein, is expressed during epithelial morphogenetic processes, like blastopore closure during neurulation (upper panel) and is activated in response to embryonic epithelial wounding (lower panel). For details, see "Xwig1, a novel putative endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein expressed during epithelial morphogenesis and in response to wound healing" by P. Klingbeil, G. Frazzetto and T. Bouwmeester in this issue.
