The homeodomain gene Pdx1 is required for the normal development of the pancreas and foregut. Inducible repression of Pdx1 in the adult gut has demonstrated a novel role for Pdx1 in the maintenance of regional cellular identity in the gastroduodenal domain of the adult gut, suggesting a conserved functional role for the Parahox genes. The image shows the co-expression of Pdx1 (red) and a GFP (green) reporter gene in the duodenal villi and Brunner’s glands of normal adult mice.
