During feather branch formation, epithelial cells in the stratified epidermis rearrange to form periodically arranged barb ridges. Keratinocytes within each barb ridge are then reorganized to form two rows of barbule plates. Ephrin-B and EphB3 are expressed in these epithelia in the growth phase of feather follicles. Suppressing Ephrin signaling by implanting Ephrin B1/Fc coated beads disrupted barb ridge organization, leading to a swirl of “keratinocyte pearls”.
