The expression boundaries of a Hoxa-7/lacZ transgene are shifted anteriorly when it contains three additional copies of an upstream enhancer (10.5 day mouse embryo shown on left). The anterior shifts are largely lost when the additional enhancer copies are each mutated in a single cdx binding motif (embryo on right).
